EXHIBITING NATIONALLY
The information re exhibitions is largely available on the website at www.abps.org.uk, as are the application forms for events marked **. The website also has links to FIP commissions, rules and regulations, as well as other material which is intended to support exhibitors.

You will also find details of two residential exhibiting workshops in the Spring aimed at those who have mainly displayed at club and society level, and now wish to consider the more formal disciplines associated with exhibiting, as well as others who may have exhibited only once or twice at national level, or have not exhibited for many years.

These are to be held in Washington, near Newcastle 4-6 March 2011, and Leamington Spa, in the East Midlands, 11-13 March 2011. Further details are on the website. These will include 4 sessions with that on Sunday morning concerned with judging. It is intended that this session will be the first of a two part qualification for Federation level judges. We also will be pleased to see Federation judges at the workshop. Prices quoted are for members of ABPS affiliated societies.

Finally, applications for Autumn Stampex are open until the end of the month. Application forms are also on the website and this year's seminar will be on 'Treatment' in exhibiting covering all classes, again the application form is on the website.

ISSUES RELATING TO RULES

Letter from John Hayward.

Response from Damian Lage.
Dear John
In your position as current president of the British Thematic Association you have written a letter to me because the status of the "synopsis" is apparently not clear to all exhibitors. I thank your very much for this letter, and I hope I can clarify this matter.

Yes, it is absolutely correct that there is no formal requirement for a synopsis on international level, neither in thematic class nor in any other class.

Certainly, most jurors welcome additional information of the exhibits to be judged when they prepare for their work. A synopsis would be such information, and it would help the jury teams to make sure they identify the
key items in the exhibit and better understand the concept. Both is crucial specially in thematic class, since material in any exhibit can come from all parts of philately (so it is difficult to prepare for a certain exhibit), and the concept is the personal "invention" of the collector.

In other classes it is much easier to derive a guess what to expect just from the title. And in many instances, just one handbook is sufficient for a perfect preparation.

Probably this is the reason why some thematic jurors have started to promote the idea of a synopsis. I, personally, see another good reason to top of these aspects: Writing a synopsis makes the collector aware of the strong and weak aspects of the exhibit and helps to better understand the awards which finally are give.

But all discussion on synopsis is currently informal talk and private initiative. There is no request for such an introduction, and the jury must not be influenced by the presence or absence of a synopsis.

Further, there are no requests for a bibliography in a thematic exhibit (and not on the title page), independent on what might be recommended for other exhibition classes. Same applies to mentioning the rarest items on the title
page or plan page. It is not forbidden to do so, but this is very unusual in thematic philately.

John, I hope this clarifies the matter? If not, please insist.

Have a good start into the year 2010!

Best regards,
Damian

P.S.: I put Jonas Hällström on CC becomes he is one of the promoters of the synopsis, and you explicitly mentioned him in your letter.
